The responsibility of the writer Essay A person once said, Literature opens a dark window on the soul, revealing more about what is bad in human nature then what is good. In other words, authors unlock an evil portal on the spirit and display more about what is regretful in the human race then what is good. This true is because the writer is free to opinionate and write about their intimate emotions that for the most part are unpleasant. John Steinbeck, author of Mice and Men, said, It is the responsibility of the writer to expose our many grievous fault and failures and to hold up to the light our dark and dangerous dreams, for the purpose of improvement. What he means is that it is the authors mission to reveal our severe mistakes so that eventually we will learn not to make that same errors. I agree with both quotes. In Author Millers tragedy, The Crucible, and J. Ronald Oakleys historical essay, The Great Fear, reveals on how fear can intersect and tear everyone apart. The theme in The Crucible is that hysteria can tear apart a small village. Hysteria replaces logic and allows people to believe that their neighbors are committing ridiculous and unbelievable crimes like communing with the devil and killing babies. In the play, the townsfolk accept and become active in the hysterical atmosphere not only out of genuine religious piety but also because it gives them a chance to express repressed sentiments and to act on long-held grudges. Throughout the madness, Abigails motivations were jealousy and a desire to have revenge on Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail takes advantage of the situation and uses it to accuse Elizabeth Proctor of witchcraft and have her sent to jail. There is little symbolism within The Crucible, but the play can be seen as symbolic of the paranoia about communism that spread through America in the 1950s. In Oakleys essay, The Great Fear, many Americans feared that Communist spies had infiltrated the country. As with the alleged witches of Salem, suspected Communists were encouraged to confess and to identify other Red sympathizers as means of escaping punishment. However, instead of the dozens of people hurt by the witch trials, thousands of people had their lives ruined during the Red scare. Senator Joseph McCarthy exploited the fears of those who believed that the  Communist threat was a serious issue and that the country had to take protective measures. McCarthy began a proceeding to track down Communism in the U.S. He figured the way to do this was to call into question the people he thought seemed to be potential Communists and take them to court. He called in movie stars and writers, basically any famous person in the liberal arts at the time and questioned them. McCarthy said in his speech, I have in my hand a list of 205 cases of individuals who appear to be either card-carrying members or certainly loyal to the Communist Party. McCarthy went on to argue that some of these people were passing secret information to the Soviet Union. This witch-hunt and anti-communist hysteria became known as McCarthyism. Joseph McCarthy was a sleazy intimidator. Even though he was bringing to the attention of America the eminent threat of Communism, he aimlessly attacked innocent people. He ruined the careers of hundreds of innocent men and women on the flimsiest evidence to advance his own. He was a cold-hearted man who was a disgrace to the United States. His anti-Communist dedication was not based upon ideology but for his need for a headline-gaining cause. Yet for all of the suffering he directly caused throughout his entire career, he ironically never once was able to directly convict a single suspected Communist of a crime. Determination I am a very dependable person. When I start a project I concentrate and focus in it. I use my determination in all parts of my life. In school my determination has allowed me to achieve many academic accomplishments. In an engineering course I was given an assignment to design a house using Autocad. This house had to be designed to all of the state building codes. My teacher had set up many different requirements for the project. It had to be an original design with four different types of architectural plans. This entire project was due at the end of the semester along with the regular homework assignments. My determination allowed me to complete all these tasks in almost one half the time allotted. I received a 99.7% grade for this massive project. My determination is what dove me to its completion. My determination also is extremely important at my part -- time job. My job is to sell computers and many other business machines. Selling the computers and peripherals was not a problem, but when I started working I knew almost nothing about fax machines and copiers. I was determined to learn about these new machines so I read the magazines and listened to the representative to learn about the machines. My determination is what helped me to learn about these products so that I could share my information with the customer. Now with my expertise in copiers and fax machines I can answer almost any question that customers have and perform almost any type of service necessary on them. Determination again is what lead me to be ahead in my field of study and work. A good wrestler has to have determination. When I was at a tournament in January of 1996 I broke my shoulder blade. I was in the second and final match of the day when I broke my clavicle (I didn't know that it was broken until a week later). This happened on a Friday night, and I was upset that I had lost the chance for the championship by two points. I knew that I would be wrestling for third place the next day so I would have to shake off any aches or pains that I might have. I woke up the next morning and my shoulder was throbbing. Effects of Soil Ph on Radish Plants Growth Essay

Background information: the soil ph can have 2 different impacts on the growth of plant roots. First and most important is how it affects the concentration of nutrients present in the soil itself. This variable varies depending on the ph tendency, in particular, nutrients like phosphorous, potassium ,sulphur, calcium and magnesium tend to drastically decrease in more acidic ph conditions (7.5) [figure 1]. The importance of these types of nutrients varies depending on the species of plant, in this case radish tends to show higher concentrations of Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Copper, Manganese, Phosphorous and Sodium. These all tend to grow in more alkali or neutral soil conditions rather than acidic as showed in figure 1. Another variable affected by a change in ph is the growth of microorganisms in the soil specifically affecting their respiration rate and the PLFA (phospholipid fatty acids) concentration [figure 3], which consist in the main component of the cell membrane of most microbes, including the soil ones. In this case too the graph [figure 2] seems to show a straight directly proportional relationship between respiration rate and PLFA concentration and PH growth, meaning that microorganisms optimum ph conditions tend to be either neutral or slightly alkali, particuralrly for respiration the best fit line on the graph displays a steeper line with a bigger gradient. Conclusion As a hypothesis i would say that the best results in terms of mass gaining and length should be matched by the radish seeds growing in an alkali or neutral enviroment, rather than in an acidic one To revisit my hypothesis and understand why the base solution should provide better nutrients for the radish rather than the other ones it is very important to understand the concept of CEC (Cation Exchange Capacity), this property of the soil is defined as: â€Å"The total number of cations a soil can hold–or its total negative charge–is the soil’s cation exchange capacity†[1] the capacity of the soil to contain these ions is measured in millequivalents per 100 grams of soil (meq/100g) the increase of this soil property is usually associated with an increase of fertility, the reason being that the higher the CEC the higher the maximum amount of nutrients (ions) [figure 4]the soil is capable of holding and more likely it is to improve its productivity. The increase in CEC is usually associated to a decrease in pH (showed in the graph [figure 5]). This has been prooved by Dr Lloyd A. Peterson who carried out an experiment of soil acidification through the use of N fertilizers [2] (the main chemical in these compounds is Ammonia, NH3, which as it’s released in the soil is converted into ammonium nitrate by the bacteria, during this biological process, 3 positive hydrogen ions are released in the soil per ammonia molecule converted. The increase in the H+ ions concentration makes the soil acidic.) which eventually lead to a much higher CEC rate, which should theoretically improve the soil fertility itself, but, as a side effect of the acidification is a drastic decline registered for the exchangeable base cations particularly in the ions Ca2+, which suffered of – 31% exchangeability and a – 36% for Mg2+[3] actually worsened the fertility of the soil since the ECEC (effective cation exchange capacity, calculated by adding the exchangeable base cations and the exchangeable acidity) actually turned out to be negative, meaning that the relation between pH and the ECEC itself is actually directly proportional. To conclude, in the case of radish especially, the ions suffering from base cation exchangeability decrease, which are magnesium and calcium make up a big part of the nutrients absorbed by the seeds (see the background paragraph) this causes the radish growth to be damaged by an acidification of the soil. This explains why roots growing in acidic conditions should display the worst results, while the ones living in alkali and neutral soils should grow longer and heavier, because the ECEC along with the nutrients concentration in the soil varies depending on the change in pH, in this case with a linear directly proportional rate, meaning that as pH increases (towards alkali) so does the base cations nutrients concentration in the soil and the plant growth benefits from it.

Nonverbal communication is when a person users gestures instead of words. Gestures can be facial expressions or body expressions. While doing research I learned that gestures are different around the world of different cultures. I chose French, Italian, and German to compare and contrast. The French word Mon ceil means disbelief in what someone is telling someone else. The gesture is taking the index finger, and pulling the skin down under the eye. In Italian this gestures is called Intesa, which means to remember our agreement. Germany did not have this gesture. It was hard to find gestures in German.
